Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT) lists IPA Carbon Footprint Guidance in its sector library

The recently published update of the IPA’s Carbon Footprint Guidance for primary-produced PGMs—a best-practice framework for calculating the product carbon footprint (PCF) of our metals—has now also replaced the previous version on the website of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT).

The guidance is accessible via the PACT link.

PACT now rates both the “overall approach” and the “calculation guideline” as “aligned.” This represents an improvement from the “partially aligned” rating in the “overall approach” category assigned to the first version of our guidance.

For the categories data quality and validity period, the initiative has assessed IPA’s guidance as “partially aligned.” This reflects the fact that the guidance does not prescribe the use of specific data-quality metrics, given the ongoing methodological discussions in this area. In addition, the guidance foresees update intervals of three to five years, compared with PACT’s minimum update frequency of every three years.

The update of the guidance follows close exchange with the initiative as well as rapid methodological developments in the PCF field, such as updates to the rulebooks of PACT and the automotive data ecosystem Catena-X, both of which are relevant initiatives for our members.

We will continue to monitor these developments and aim to reassess the calculation of data-quality metrics in the next LCA update.
